Breaking News:  Dallas Police Under Attack

Saturday, June 13th, 2015

Multiple gunmen toting automatic weapons opened fire on officers outside Dallas Police headquarters early Saturday morning, before one man fled the scene being chased by police in what witnesses described as an armored van, according to Dallas Police Chief David Brown.

Brown said during a news conference that the shootout began about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, when the suspects parked in front of the building located south of downtown and began firing. He said at least one of the suspects fled the scene in a van that rammed a police cruiser before leading police on a chase that ended in an ongoing standoff at parking lot in Hutchins, where additional gunfire was exchanged. Brown said the suspect driving the van has told officers that he blames police for losing custody of his son and “accusing him of being a terrorist.” The gunman also said he had explosives in the van, which appeared to be outfitted with gun ports in the sides.

Brown said negotiations with that suspect and the SWAT unit are ongoing. No injuries were reported.

Brown said, based on witness accounts, as many as four suspects may have been involved in the original shooting, including some who may have been strategically positioned at elevated positions. Police could not immediately confirm how many shooters were involved and where any additional suspects may be located.

Meanwhile, Brown said police also found four bags outside police headquarters, including one that held a pipe bomb that later exploded. He said police were evacuating nearby residents as a precaution.

Brown said no motive for the shooting has been established.

A Texas jury has found Eddie Ray Routh guilty of murder in the killings of “American Sniper” Chris Kyle and Kyle’s friend, Chad Littlefield.

The jury announced its verdict at around 9:20 p.m. local time (10:20 p.m. E.T.) at a Stephenville courthouse. They were given the case at 6:36 p.m. local time (7:36 p.m. E.T.).

Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, and Routh was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

“We just want to say that we’ve waited two years for God to get justice for us on behalf of our son and as always God has proved to be faithful, and we’re so thrilled that we have the verdict that we have tonight,” Littlefield’s mother, Judy Littlefield, told reporters after the verdict was read.

Routh, 27, admitted to killing both men at the shooting range of Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, southwest of Dallas, on Feb. 2, 2013.

Routh pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to capital murder. His attorneys have said Routh, a former Marine corporal who served in Iraq but not in a combat role, was in the grip of a medically diagnosed psychosis at the time of the killings.

Prosecutors said that Routh was drinking and smoking marijuana on the morning of the crime. They argued that he was paranoid because he was high, and that he was angry about living with his parents, relationship problems, money and his job — then exploded after he believed.

Ebola Patient Dr. Martin Salia Has Died in Nebraska

Dr. Martin Salia, a surgeon who was diagnosed with Ebola in Sierra Leone and flown to Nebraska over the weekend for treatment, has died, hospital officials said Monday.

Salia, 44, became the second person to die of the disease in the United States. Thomas Eric Duncan, who contracted Ebola in Liberia and traveled to Dallas, died last month.

Salia landed Saturday in Omaha. He was the 10th patient to be treated on American soil and the third at Nebraska Medical Center. Hospital officials had said that he was perhaps sicker than any other patient flown to the United States from West Africa.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share this news,” said Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the hospital’s biocontainment unit. “Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren’t able to save him.”

The hospital planned to release further details later Monday.

Salia, a native of Sierra Leone and a legal U.S. resident, was living in Sierra Leone and working at a hospital when he was diagnosed last week. The Ebola outbreak, the worst in recorded history, has killed more than 5,000 people in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

Salia has a wife and two children who live in the Washington suburb of New Carrollton, Maryland. A son, Maada, told NBC News last week that Salia knew the risk of working in West Africa but wanted to do his part.

“Even though he knows the sickness is already out, he decided to still go and help his people because he wanted to show that he loves his people,” the son said. “He’s really, really a hero to me.

Amber Joy Vinson is the second American nurse to contract the Ebola virus after treating the first patient who was diagnosed in the United States at a Dallas hospital.

Here’s what we know so far about Vinson, her background, her treatment, the people who may have come in contact with her and precautions being taken.

WHO IS AMBER VINSON?

Amber Joy Vinson, 29, is a nurse who was planning her upcoming wedding before she was diagnosed with Ebola this week.

Vinson is from Akron, Ohio, and has two degrees from Kent State University, where three of her relatives work. She was licensed as a registered nurse in Ohio in 2009 and remains licensed there, records show, though she has since moved to Dallas. She became an R.N. in Texas in 2012.

She wanted to help people. Amber has always been kind and compassionate,” said Diane Sloane Rhynes, whose late brother was married to Vinson’s mother for several years and who considers Vinson her niece.

Vinson had flown from Dallas to Ohio on Oct. 10 to visit her family there and plan her upcoming May wedding, before she returned Oct. 13. Now, she is being treated in isolation for Ebola.

Bishop T.D. Jakes Suing Young Jeezy and Kendrick Lamar

Internationally-renwoned and universally-beloved Bishop T.D. Jakes is vowing to file a lawsuit against popular rapper Young Jeezy and singer Kendrick Lamar for sampling portions of his sermon without his consent.

Jakes, the highly influential televangelist who transformed a tiny West Virginia-based congregation into a transcontinental religious empire called The Potter’s House in Dallas, took great umbrage when he learned that Jeezy and Lamar used a part of his sermon for their song “Holy Ghost” remix.

Jakes took to Facebook to announce that he will be taking legal action against the hip-hop stars as he revealed he did not give the rappers consent to use any portion of his Don’t Let Chatter Stop You speech that he delivered back in 2013.

“The Holy Ghost remix by Jeezy featuring Kendrick Lamar was produced without the knowledge or consent of T.D. Jakes, TDJ Enterprises, Dexterity Music or its associated companies,” the Facebook post explained. “We are taking the necessary legal actions to stop the unauthorized use of T.D. Jakes’ intellectual property.”

The sampled clip features roughly 20 seconds of Jakes’ speech in the very beginning of the track.

Legal pundits don’t believe the lawsuit will hold its own in court, but the minister remains undeterred and unbowed.

“I’m under attack, but I’m still on fire,” Jakes roared amid a thundering congregation. “I’ve got some chatter, but I’m still on fire. I’ve got some threat, but I’m still on fire. I got some liabilities, but I’m still on fire. It’s not amazing that I’m on fire. I’ve been to hell and back, but I’m still on fire.”

While no reps for Jakes, 57, nor Jeezy or Kendrick have commented publicly about the lawsuit, legal experts are not so sure that Jakes has a strong case here.

“This sounds like a strong fair use case,” Los Angeles lawyer Jonathan Kirsch told the Daily News.

According to Kirsch, the 1994 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Miami rap group Live Crew could be enough to let Jeezy and Kendrick off the hook.

In that ruling, the judge decided that the group’s sampling of singer Roy Orbison’s Oh, Pretty Woman was fair use for parody purposes.
However, the Rosa Parks camp successful sued groundbreaking rap group OutKast for using her name in one of their songs without her expressed permission.

Former Dallas Mavericks ManiAAc dancer Erbie Bowser was arrested at the scene of a violent DeSoto, Texas shooting spree. He’s accused of opening fire in two homes as he looked for his ex-girlfriend, killing four people and injuring four others.

Police were called to a home in Dallas around 10:30 p.m., where they found four gunshot victims, two of whom had died. Bowser then allegedly headed to DeSoto and opened fire in another home, killing two and injuring two young boys aged 11 and 13.

DeSoto police Cpt. Melissa Franks couldn’t confirm that an explosive was used in the attack, despite several media outlets reporting the story, as they are currently awaiting results from a Dallas bomb squad investigation.

Toya Smith, 43, was killed at the home in Dallas and was identified by relatives as Bowser’s ex-girlfriend. Bowser’s ex-wife, who hasn’t been identified, reportedly owned the home that was shot up in DeSoto.
