Tuesday, May 26th, 2015

At least 12 people were killed and 44 others were wounded over the Memorial Day weekend in Chicago, only slightly higher than the toll of gun violence the previous weekend in the city.

It is sad to report that at least 56 Chicago citizens were shot over Memorial Day Weekend, with 12 of them succumbing to their injuries.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the victims (mostly men) ranged from 17-47 years of age, with one women being shot by her boyfriend early Tuesday morning around 2:00 a.m. The latest killing was that of a 17-year-old boy who was shot several times in the back and leg Monday night around 7:50 p.m. Many of the fatalities occurred between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, bringing the total to nine victims before Monday afternoon. Three others were killed a short time later.

As many shootings that took place over the course of the weekend, no one has been placed in custody for the crimes. Chicago Police spokesman Officer Thomas Sweeney reported that many of the victims were taken to different hospitals in serious or critical condition, and Chicago police are currently investigating every shooting.

The greatest thing ever? A Taco Bell in Chicago may soon get the green light to sell alcohol

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

Taco Bell is applying for a liquor license for a new Taco Bell franchise in the Wicker Park neighborhood that will also feature a “completely new urban restaurant design.” In other words, it sounds like Taco Bell is going for a more upscale vibe in this location… and yes, we just burst out laughing after using the words “Taco Bell” and “upscale” in the same sentence.

Man Robs Subway Then Crosses Street To Buy Sandwich at Potbelly, Police Say

Tuesday, May 5th, 2015

Police say Fredrick Warren was still eating his Potbelly sandwich when arrested.

Police say a Chicago man robbed a Subway sandwich shop with a knife, and then crossed the street and bought a sandwich at Subway’s competitor, Potbelly, where he was arrested.

Fredrick Warren, 43, was still eating his Potbelly sandwich when police arrived just before 5 p.m. on April 26, police said.

About 20 minutes earlier, Warren had walked into the Subway at 6449 N. Sheridan Road and held up the cashier with a folding knife, police said.

A customer who walked in mid-robbery told investigators she saw Warren leaning over the counter and grabbing cash from the register, police said.

Investigators caught Warren’s trail by watching Loyola University Police surveillance video, according to Chicago and Loyola police departments.

It showed Warren walking south down Sheridan Road, crossing the street and then walking back north to Potbelly at 6464 N. Sheridan Road, police said.

There was no sign of him leaving the Potbelly, so they went inside and found him eating near the back of the shop, his gold coat draped over his seat, police said.

He was arrested — and police found $186 in cash and a silver-bladed folding knife with a black handle on him, police said.

Warren, of the 2300 block of East 75th Street, was charged with armed robbery.

Boyfriend Of Missing Charlotte Teacher Bianca Tanner Charged With Murder

Thursday, July 3rd, 2014

Police in Charlotte arrested the boyfriend of missing Charlotte teacher Bianca Tanner Thursday morning and charged him with her murder after a body was found in Steele Creek.

Angelo Grayson Smith Jr. is charged with murder.

The body, which was found in a wooded area on the 10400 block of Calico Crossing Lane near Lake Wylie, will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office to be identified.

Smith posted bail Wednesday.

He was extradited back to Charlotte after he was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Chicago over the weekend.

Detectives interviewed him for hours on Wednesday about his relationship with Tanner, and then transported him to the jail, where he was placed under a $100,000 bond Tuesday. That bond was lowered to $20,000 on Wednesday.

Officials said earlier Wednesday that if Smith posted his bond and was released, he would be on house arrest and would be required to wear an electronic monitoring device.

Smith did post bond before 9 p.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said Smith was always a person of interest and had been misleading investigators.

Smith told reporters that he doesn’t know where Tanner is as he was being moved from CMPD headquarters to the Mecklenburg County Jail Tuesday afternoon.

Tanner’s family decided they wanted to talk with Smith to see if he would give them some answers, and went to the jail to talk to him.

After the meeting, the family told WBTV, “We’re no closer today than we were the night she went missing, unfortunately & sadly!”

Tanner was last seen June 7.

A warrant was issued on Smith two weeks after Tanner disappeared. Detectives say Smith left Tanner’s three year old son home alone.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are calling the Tanner case a homicide, and say Smith is a person of interest – he was the last person to see the 31-year-old mother.

According to warrants released in the case, Smith told investigators that he received a text message that led to an argument between him and Tanner the night she disappeared. Tanner left the apartment intoxicated, carrying a bag with her, Smith says.

She hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Tanner recently moved to Charlotte with her son for a teaching job. Before that she was a teacher at Reedy Fork Elementary School in Guilford County.

Tanner’s family members have been conducting searches for her. Tuesday afternoon investigators met with them to give a “briefing on the status of the case, where it’s going, and the strategy to locate Bianca.”

Chief Monroe said “we have determined there will likely be a couple of more searches within the area of Charlotte. We’re not going to divulge those areas just yet.”

After getting a police briefing, and then talking with Smith – Bianca’s family members Tuesday night said “right now we’re feeling overwhelmed
