Saturday, June 6th, 2015

American Pharoah becomes 12th thoroughbred in history to win horse racing’s big three.

ELMONT, NY – The winner of this year’s Arkansas Derby has won the coveted Triple Crown.

American Pharoah’s victory in the Belmont Stakes early Saturday evening puts him on an elite list of only 12 horses that have won horse racing’s big three.

Saturday’s win followed up American Pharoah’s victories at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

The powerful bay colt with a faint star on his forehead was bred in Kentucky by Ahmed Zayat, CEO of Zayat Stables, LLC.

American Pharoah also won the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park this year.

(KTRK) — Mathew Knowles says anytime his daughter Beyonce is involved, people tend to blow things out of proportion.

“It is absolutely crazy and ridiculous,” said Mathew Knowles, CEO of Music World Entertainment.

Over the weekend, his staff put on a House of Dereon garage sale with about a third of the items related to Beyonce. Since then, Knowles says he’s been bombarded with media accusations that he’s trying to have a “Beyonce sale” because he is trying to make ends meet.

“I get to the office and my assistant of 15 years tells me that this mass hysteria, which I call Jedi-mind trick, is happening,” said Knowles. Referring to the garage sale, Knowles said, “I came up Sunday to help them out. I was nice enough to take photos with people… I see that backfired on me. I see a simple act of kindness ends up being, ‘I’m going out of business, it ends up being I’m broke.'”

Knowles didn’t address his financial situation, but says the reason behind the garage sale is that he’s cleaning house so he can renovate his property, specifically, the Rice Mansion. ABC13 did see contractors and plumbers taking a look around while we were there.

This garage sale had piles of $5 Beyonc shirts, posters and CDs – with even lower-priced Solange memorabilia –but there was also a smattering of old furniture, candles, old country CDs and even a broken Christmas tree.

FedEx Coming To Little Rock, Bringing Hundreds Of Jobs

Friday, December 12th, 2014

(Katv) It will be the largest distribution center in the state and it’s coming to southwest Little Rock. FedEx is expected to employ more than 200 people according to the Little Rock regional Chamber of Commerce.

They’ve already broken ground on this more than $50 million capital investment. This FedEx Distribution Center will sit on 44 acres and will be located south of the I-30 and I-430 intersection.

“Fantastic announcement, obviously anytime you have new projects coming to your area something as this large with over 50 million in new capital investment, new activity, new truck drivers,” said Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Jay Chesshir.

While FedEx is expected to employ more than 200, construction is already putting people to work.

“Significant construction jobs, significant truck driving jobs, significant ancillary jobs when you look at the industry needed to supply a major distribution facility like this, it’s not just that 50 plus million dollar investment in the project that is so great, it’s everything including that,” added Chesshir.

The distribution center will be located south of the I-30 and I-430 intersection off of South Loop and Alexander Road.

“Obviously wonderfully located form the stand point of I-40 and I-30 and I-430, from a logistics prospective and being to service a large part of the region, great location,” said Chesshir.

The Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce expects the project to be complete and operating by mid to late 2016.

A former Baltimore Ravens cheerleader and the estranged wife of a prominent Maryland energy executive has been arrested and charged in connection with a sexual relationship involving a 15-year-old boy.

Delaware State Police said Wednesday that 47-year-old Molly Shattuck was indicted Monday on two counts of third-degree rape, four counts of unlawful sexual contact and three counts of providing alcohol to minors. She was released on $84,000 bond after a Wednesday arraignment.

Police say a 15-year-old boy reported to having an inappropriate sexual relationship with Shattuck after meeting her on Instagram.

First intimate encounter happened at an AMC Theater where Shattuck and the boy kissed and touched each other sexually. The incident continued in the back seat of Shattock’s Escalade in the parking lot of a middle school.

Police report the relationship culminated with sexual activity at a vacation rental home in Bethany Beach, Delaware, over Labor Day weekend.

Shattuck’s attorney didn’t return a call for comment.

Shattuck gained celebrity status when she became the oldest cheerleader in NFL history at the age of 38. Shattuck is separated from Mayo Shattuck, former CEO of Baltimore-based Constellation Energy Nuclear Group. She has three children of her own, aged 15, 13 and 11.

J.C. Penney to Cut 2,000 Jobs, Close 33 Stores

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

Struggling department-store operator J.C. Penney announced it will cut 2,000 jobs and close 33 stores as it tries to get back on the path to profitability.

The news raises concerns that Penney’s holiday season sales were not what the company hoped for and that the chain needs to do even more to recover from a turnaround plan that has had disastrous results.

J.C. Penney Co., based in Plano, Texas, said earlier this month said it was pleased with its holiday results but declined to give sales figures, raising worries among Wall Street analysts about how the season actually fared.

“It was a season where they realized that they had to do more to reconnect with the customers they’ve lost,” said Brian Sozzi, CEO and chief equities strategist at Belus Capital Advisors.

The cuts announced Wednesday should save more than $65 million annually. The company will take $26 million in pretax charges in the third quarter and $17 million in future quarters. Penney has 116,000 staffers and operates more than 1,100 stores. All the job cuts are related to the store closings.

Industry Chokehold: Mighty Joe drops some knowledge on the masses (Part 1)

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

mm3“What’s better than being independent and living and dying by your own map? Nothing, which is why I am so passionate about providing as much information and be as much of a mentor as I can be to the Indie process …” – Joshua J. “Mighty Joe” Slack, Jr. in “Industry Chokehold”

It seems these days that the only true “friends” an independent artist has, are hard work, grind and those who tirelessly promote them. While I tend to agree with that to a certain extent degree, but there are some individuals in the industry who have made it their business to help others, while asking little in return. Meet Joshua J. Slack, Jr., a young man who is known as “Mighty Joe” of Mighty Muzik. If ever there was a man who wears many hats, this is him.

Mighty Joe, along with several others, have helped to build Mighty Muzik into an empire that dedicates its resources to helping independent artists. One of its mottos is, “Where NOLA talent calls home” – while that’s true, Mighty Muzik has been more of an influence to all indie artists, than what it can ever know. Mighty Joe has been an integral part of the positive influence brought about by Mighty Muzik and those who work within the brand.

The Heat was blessed with an advanced copy of “Industry Chokehold” and all I can say is, it will quickly become the handbook by which independent artists live. We highly recommended the book. It is evident that Mighty Joe shared all of his knowledge. In fact, this master of branding is giving artists all the game needed to succeed in an industry where failure is almost always the norm.

We sat down with Mighty Joe and talked to him and here’s what he had to say:

THE HEAT MAGAZINE:  You have your hands in all sorts of projects that benefit those who are in the entertainment industry. Tell our readers about your endeavors.

MIGHTY JOE: Well first I’d like to thank you guys for featuring me and extending a hand. I am currently CEO, publishing, designing, writing, branding, marketing, managing the site ( for my brand MightyMuzik™. I have my hands in a few sponsored local events such as The Sound Clash & MashOut with El Williams. January of last year my team & I put together the Code Red Network which is an online multimedia network and we have begun production on our first three show series; NOLA Top10 Video countdown, Disclaimer Comedy, and Branding My Biz with Kevin Griffin. December of 2012 we launched Monstars Radio in a joint effort with jusCookie, which is a 24-hour online radio station with live shows. The first show being The Cookie Jar with host jusCookie which airs Mondays 7-9p. In the branding and artwork field I own and run Code Red Studios LLC where I do a ton of freelance graphic & web design work. February of last year I got into Video production so we have added that to our arsenal of projects. Some of our work can be found if you have seen 2011 or 2012 NOLA Hip Hop Awards Website and Brand identities, 2012 NOLA Summer Jam website & Brand identities, Oceana Grill Commercials, and we are currently part of the promotion behind Chef John Besh’s project Chefs Move! Scholarship to name a few. I keep in contact with a nice amount of New Orleans talent and give advice where I can.

If you are like me and just about every other gamer out there you have been playing a game and thought to yourself “I could do better.” Well now is your chance. Scirra has launched Construct 2, an HTML5 game creator. Now you can bring all your wildest video game dreams to life, and the best part is you don’t have to know how to program. Construct 2 takes care of that for you.

With Construct 2 you can not only publish your game creations on Scirra’s Arcade, but also on iOS, Android, Windows 8, Facebook, the Chrome Web Store, the web, and Windows desktop apps. Construct 2 features a ground breaking drag-and-drop ‘events’ system that lets you place and set controls of everything in your game by simply (you guessed it)  dragging and dropping them into the creation window. Now it is easier than ever to get your ideas out there.

Construct 2 just received its 100th update which includes WebGL shader effects. These allow Photoshop-style visual effects using GPU hardware to be processed in real time. Now all those pretty pictures you made in Photoshop can be brought to life in a new medium that you can interact with. But don’t think you can just slap together some 5 minute platformer and get rich and famous over night. With nearly a quarter of a million downloads of Construct 2, over a million plays on the Scirra Arcade, and hundreds of new users registering every week, Construct 2 is rapidly becoming a leading tool for the type of web development previously done with Flash. Quality over quantity will surely be the way to the top.
Founded in 2011 by brothers Ashley Gullen and Thomas Gullen, Scirra aims to make everyone into game developers by removing the need to know how to program. Scirra are privately funded and following on from the success of its open-source predecessor ‘Construct Classic’, which has been downloaded over 500,000 times to date.

“Developers want to publish their creations everywhere – from their websites to iOS and Android and the upcoming Windows 8 App Store – and preferably simultaneously. Construct 2 is the only tool which makes this painless with its HTML5-based engine, and the gorgeous new WebGL shader effects are the icing on the cake!”

– Ashley Gullen, Director

“DirectCanvas can offer a huge performance boost for HTML5 games, and we’re excited to support Construct 2 as a new way for developers to publish mobile games faster than ever before.”

– Roy Smith, appMobi,

“It looks like HTML5 gaming has finally reached the tipping point and companies like Scirra with powerful game engines, like Construct 2, are clearly leading the way…When developers combine Construct 2 with our CocoonJS technology, the result is high quality, native-performing Hybrid HTML5 games that get delivered directly to the app stores.”

– Eneko Knorr, CEO of Ludei Inc.

Sucka Free Records CEO pleads guilty to federal drug charges

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

(AllHipHop News) Former Houston music executive Duane “Big Hump” Hobbs is facing a minimum mandatory 10 years in prison, after pleading guilty to cocaine distribution charges.

Hump is the founder of Sucka Free, an influential Houston Hip-Hop label best known for releasing albums by Lil Flip.

Hump, born Estell Douglas Hobbs Jr, 52, was arrested on drug charges in December of 2011, after an investigation revealed that he was part of an African-American drug network.

Federal prosecutors arrested dozens of others in the network, which sold hundreds of kilos of cocaine regularly, from 1995 until 2010.

Hobbs would receive hundreds of kilos of cocaine and store drugs for the network, which operated in Mexico, Houston, Chicago and Mississippi.

Hobbs pleaded guilty on Monday (March 26) and now faces the minimum mandatory of 10 years in prison, without the possibility of parole.

At its height, Sucka Free released Lil Flip’s platinum album Undaground Legend and its follow-up, U Gotta Feel Me, which went double platinum.
