Breaking News: Takata air bag recall becomes biggest ever in United States

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Air bag maker Takata Corp. has agreed to declare 33.8 million of its inflator mechanisms defective, effectively doubling the number of cars and trucks that have been recalled in the U.S. so far.

Air bag maker Takata Corp. has agreed to declare 33.8 million of its inflator mechanisms defective, effectively doubling the number of cars and trucks that have been recalled in the U.S. so far.

The announcement was made Tuesday afternoon by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which reached an agreement with Takata after sparring with the company for the past year over the size of the recalls and the cause of the problem with millions of air bags. It will be the largest recall in the agency’s history.

Many of Takata’s air bags can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and sending shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The air bags are responsible for six deaths worldwide and more than 100 injuries.

Ten automakers, including Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., have recalled 17 million vehicles in the U.S. and more than 36 million worldwide because of the problem. Those numbers will grow by millions because of the agreement, but it’s unclear which manufacturers will be most affected by the expanded recalls.

Automakers must conduct recalls even if they are for defective parts.

The Takata recall dwarfs last year’s highly publicized recall of 2.6 million General Motors small cars for defective ignition switches.

Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion Concept: Is This the Vehicular Future

Thursday, March 26th, 2015

We have often complained about the lack of truly far-reaching concept cars on today’s show circuit. Instead of creating visions of a distant future, too often automakers show concepts that closely resemble upcoming production cars; the idea is to condition the public. We may have to shelve that lament for a little while because, with the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept unveiled at CES, Daimler has just shown a dream car in the fully original sense.

Powered by two rear-mounted electric motors with a total peak output of 272 horsepower (and a sustained output of 163 hp), the rear-wheel-drive F 015 is said to sprint to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds, while top speed is limited to 125 mph. The electricity is generated by means of a hydrogen fuel cell; a high-voltage battery can provide short bursts of additional power.

The F 015’s body and structure use aluminum, high-strength steel, and composite materials—including carbon fiber. Its “monolithic” shape features a blurred division between the body and the windows, possibly inspired by Bertone’s classic Lancia Sibilo concept.

Social Media Threats Delay Release Of Police Name In Shooting

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

FERGUSON, Mo. — Authorities on Tuesday delayed revealing the identity of the police officer who fatally shot an unarmed teen three days ago, citing threats against the officer on social media.

Police Chief Thomas Jackson had said he would reveal the officer’s name by noon Tuesday. Police department spokesman Timothy Zoll said because of the threats there is now no timetable for release of the name.

Witnesses say Michael Brown, 18, had raised his hands to surrender when the shots were fired. Police have not confirmed that information.

Monday night, officers in riot gear lobbed tear gas at crowds angered by the weekend shooting. There were 15 arrests but no reports of looting.

“This is a lot of young people reacting to getting shot at with tear gas, being met with riot gear,” said protester Shawn Jordan. “How else are these young kids going to react when they are being met with aggressiveness?”

Jackson said members of the crowd threw rocks at police and gunfire came from the crowd, so officers used tear gas and shot “beanbag rounds” meant to stun them. Jackson said police blocked off the area where most of the looting and vandalism occurred the previous night out of concern that cars passing by might hit demonstrators in the street.

At a community forum Monday, national NAACP President Cornell William Brooks demanded justice while condemning the violence and looting.

Tracy Morgan Critical Condition After Fatal Car Crash

Saturday, June 7th, 2014

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was in intensive care Saturday after the limousine bus he was riding in was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on the New Jersey Turnpike that left one dead, state police said.

The vehicle carrying the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” cast member and six others was involved in a six-vehicle accident on the turnpike near Cranbury Township at about 1 a.m., Sgt. 1st Class Greg Williams told The Associated Press.

One person died in the crash, which occurred in the northbound lanes of the turnpike near mile marker 71.5, Williams said. There was no immediate word on other injuries from the accident.

A spokesman at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, says a patient named Tracy Morgan is in critical condition there, but he wouldn’t confirm it was the actor.

Two tractor-trailers, an SUV, two cars and Morgan’s limo bus were involved in the accident, Williams said. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the pileup.

Morgan performed comedy standup Friday night at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Delaware. His scheduled appearance at the Fillmore Charlotte in North Carolina on Saturday night has been canceled.

The 45-year-old New York City native joined “SNL” in 1996 and was on the sketch-comedy program for seven years before leaving to star in “The Tracy Morgan Show” in 2003. That show lasted just one season. In 2006, Morgan found a long-running role on NBC’s hit show “30 Rock,” which was created by “SNL” co-star Tina Fey.

Morgan grew up fatherless, one of five siblings, in a blighted section of Brooklyn, where he helped raise and support the family.

He once called his gift for being funny “a defense mechanism” for his miserable circumstances.

As a teen, he started doing comedy on the streets to supplement the family’s welfare income.

He had a kidney transplant in late 2010.

The New Jersey Turnpike was closed for more than five hours after the crash.

Woman Wins Car After Arkansas Razorback Lose Big

Monday, December 30th, 2013

SHERWOOD, AR — A local businessman is paying off his wager by giving away 12 cars in 12 months.

In August, Frank Fletcher said if the Arkansas Razorback football team didn’t win an SEC game, he would give away a dozen cars.

Staying true to his word, the first winner was chosen Friday. Sherwood’s Rebecca Tyler will get the keys to a brand new SUV.

“It’s the first thing I’ve ever won in my life, the first thing,” Tyler said. “I thought my husband was lying to me when he called me.”

This wager also proved to be a boost in business for Fletcher’s car dealership.

“It’s been a real buzz,” Fletcher said. “And today we’ve probably sold more cars than we ever have, not probably, we’ve sold more cars than we ever have since we’ve been open.”

Fletcher believed more than 50 cars were sold on Friday, the day of the first drawing.

He added the publicity is priceless.

“I’m really excited about it, and I’m looking forward to the next 11, because this is going to be something that’s going to be talked about all year, it’s not a one time deal,” he said.

To register for the next drawing, all you have to do is stop in Fletcher Dodge in Sherwood.

Monday, December 30th, 2013

The Wolf of Wall Street” actor Leonardo DiCaprio has the reputation for living life just as large as the character he portrays in the hit film — a life full of fast cars, yacht parties with supermodels, and hanging out in ridiculous mansions, and the Oscar-nominated actor has reportedly sold his oceanfront Malibu compound the day after “The Wolf of Wall Street” made its Christmas debut.

The property, located along Malibu Colony Road, went for $17.35 million – almost $6 million less than the original 2012 listing of $23 million.

Built in 1927, the compound consists of a main home and a couple of guest houses. The main house comprises four bedrooms and features an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams.

One guest house comprises two bedrooms while the other is made up of a loft with a gym, media room, and office.

60 Parents & Students Fight at School Bus Stop

Friday, January 11th, 2013

Wild cellphone videos captured by students show a crowd of as many as 60 students and parents brawling in the streets of Swissvale, Pa. on Monday and again on Tuesday. The two brawls took place at the same school bus stop in Swissvale, prompting police to increase patrols in the area.

“I’d consider it a riot,” Swissvale Police Chief Greg Geppert said, adding that it was disturbing that the fights involved both students and adults.

“We have the video. Anyone who’s viewed on that video as being involved, I’ll guarantee you they’re getting arrested,” Geppert added.

Police say they have already arrested five adults and minors and may arrest nearly a dozen more soon. The students and parents were reportedly from the Woodland Hills School district, CBS Pittsburgh reports.

Investigators believe the fights were planned because several people were seen “waiting for action” with cellphone cameras out.

WTAE-TV provides some footage of the fights:

One female witness described the mayhem to WTAE-TV:

“The boys started taking their sweatshirts off, and the backpacks were thrown in the snow, and they went at it on my car, on the ground, in the snow,” said a woman who was driving through the area with her preschool-age child. “They were swinging at each other, and some of them landed on my car and just were continuing fighting while I was honking and I was screaming and I was trying to get them away.”

“At one point in the first video, there are as many as five fights going on at a time. One fight moved into traffic while cars attempted to drive around two men punching each other,” WTAE-TV reports.

“The second video showed a man in red pants walking toward another man who was trying to crawl up a hillside. The man on the ground was kicked in the head, sending him rolling backward down the hill,” the report adds.

Woodland Hills School Superintendent called the brawls “appalling” and said she has been “very disappoints” per the incident. She said any students involved in the fights will be suspended and possibly expelled from school.

But some people who witnessed the brawls in the neighborhood claim they are afraid to walk down the street now.

“I’m afraid for my life. I won’t go for a walk anymore,” one woman said.
