SKATTERMAN TEARING UP THE CHARTS WITH HIS MIXTAPE “COOKBOOK RECIPE TWO” HIT SINGLE “GET THE DJ DRUNK”

In the rap game, flash-in-the-pan artists are called legends before they can legally drive. By those standards, Skatterman is an OG in the game. But his is a hard-earned title that comes after years of sweat and heartache. Negotiating the notoriously grimy music business is nearly as dangerous as growing up in the streets of eastside Kansas City, but Skatterman somehow avoided the pitfalls of both, making a name for himself in the process.

Starting as a teen, the syllable spitter knocked out hits with different groups, starting with Southside Rollers in 1999. In high school, Skatterman met rapper Snug Brim, and the two became longtime collaborators. When their 2001 album “Worth a Million” caught the attention of Tech N9ne and his label Strange Music, the duo signed on with Strange for a successful, seven-year run..

After 8 years as Strange Music’s self proclaimed black sheep, 2011 marks the first official studio album for Indie Icon Tech N9ne’s former number one henchman. Skatterman has elevated his game even further since his separation from right hand man Snug Brim to develop a new sound and forge a new direction from a now solitary and more personal point of view.

The industry veteran, breaks new barriers and provides fans with a little more insight into life away from his previous label base. Now after over 600 shows with Tech N9ne, Mims, Lil Flip and Paul Wall among others, Skatterman is ready to leave his own indelible mark on the music game.

THE HEAT: Skatterman, what’s happening wit’cha?
SKATTERMAN: I’m trying to keep it moving ma,… trying to keep it moving. Actually I’m on the road right now doing a seventeen city tour with Krayzie Bone from Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. Just out here grinding for real.
THE HEAT: How’s the “Back In Session Tour Final Exam 2011” going?
SKATTERMAN: It’s going well. For real! We had some unexpected shows in places we have never been before like Storm Lake, IA, and it was crazy, like five thousand people was there. It was crazy. We been to Cleveland, OH, Phoenix, AZ, Albuquerque,NM, and Chicago,IL and the fans are showing crazy love to us.
THE HEAT: You spent almost a decade with Strange Music, are there any bad vibes between you and Strange Music since you broke away and started your own movement with “BiggShot Music and Films” along with your longtime friend, manager and business partner Eric Hawke?
SKATTERMAN: Oh yeah it’s all support, much love from Tech and Strange Music. The whole thang with Tech was that he really wasn’t in a position to make sure our business was getting done at the label. When we first spoke with Tech about signing with the label we were under the impression that Tech was half owner of Strange Music but he was more on the creative side of the ownership rather than a financial partner. When financial discrepancies arouse, I was expecting Tech to step up and take care of us but we found out he wasn’t in the position to handle that. Therefore; I forfeited the reminder of my contract and rather than having things get out of hand, everybody just agreed to let bygones be bygones and everybody went their own way. And so was born, BiggShot Music and Films. We are all still brothers today. Tech is even on the street tape coming out. I call it a street tape because there’s no DJ involved with the project.
THE HEAT: So tell us about what you got out here on the streets right now.
SKATTERMAN: Well right now we are on the road wit’ the “Back In Session Tour Final Exam 2011”. I’m releasing “The Cookbook Recipe Two”, with the single, “Get the DJ Drunk”. My street tape is to promote the release of my first solo debut album, “Self Made”. We’re dropping “The Cookbook Recipe Two” in a matter of days. I’m promoting some of my older music, as well, from when I was doing my thang with Tech N9ne and Strange Music. We took about five thousand of “The Cookbook Recipe Two” cds out on the road with us just to give away to get the people ready for my “Self Made” album. The street tape has all original music on it and one of the bonus track is featuring Tech N9ne. Lil Flip is also on a bonus track.
THE HEAT: Who produced “The Cookbook Recipe Two”?
SKATTERMAN: I got a couple of tracks from Mr. Lee, he was one of the main producers from Rap-O-Lot records, and I got Lil Flip and his producers. Young Shun did like about four of the tracks. Then I have some local guys that are doing their thang on this project.
THE HEAT: That’s what’s up. It’s respect from the OG’s to allow the Young G’s to be apart of their movement. I call it creating your own Hollywood.
SKATTERMAN: You got to Nik. The labels aren’t doing anything but building a facade. We think they are doing something when they aren’t. The artist we see on TV really are not moving any units. If you check the Soundscan, they really aren’t doing numbers, they aren’t doing shows, they really don’t tour, for real, not like they should and that’s real talk.
THE HEAT: Skatterman, if you could have one thing to happen right now in your career that you feel is missing to elevate you to the place you are headed to, what would that thing be?
SKATTERMAN: More radio plays on my single, “Get The DJ DrunK”. I know the streets gone feel it. But without the radio spins, along with me out here touring and grinding everyday, without that push from the radio stations, I have to do double work to get the same effect I would if I had the radio stations playing, “Get The DJ Drunk”.
THE HEAT: So, what should your fans be looking for to come from Skatterman after this release?
SKATTERMAN: Working on the “Self Made” album, working on the “I Am Skatterman.com” album, those are gonna be my first two studio records I drop. I don’t know the order I’mma drop’em yet. I was leaning towards “Self Made” but it seems everybody is really feeling the songs from “I Am Skatterman.com”. I’m going to let the people vote to see which one I drop. I’m working on another tour with Shunda K. and I’m also working on something with 2Chains. I’m actually thinking of doing my album release party featuring 2Chains.
THE HEAT: Any advice you wanna leave with the up and coming artist that are striving to make it as long as you’ve made it in the music industry game?
SKATTERMAN: Keep grinding and do everything yourself. For real, ask questions. We as artist sometimes think we know everything but we don’t. We don’t want to ask for help or guidance because everybody thinks their music is hotter than the next person’s. So many artist have these chips on their shoulders thinking they’re the shit but we’re all in the same game, trying to get PAID! If we can put the ego’s down and work together, we can ALL get some money, we all can eat good!
THE HEAT: Before we get out of here, I just wanted to thank you for slowing down just long enough to give your fans some insight into what you’ve been up to, what’s happening right now with you, and what to be on the look out for from Skatterman. But one last thing, does President Obama know he’s the co-star in your video, “Grown Man Bizness”?
SKATTERMAN: (We laugh HARD) Naw, naw, he don’t know. When I went up there to DC they made fun of me telling me I need to gone over there and holla at my man. Naw, I wish he did know.
THE HEAT: Did they tell you to gone and set the bar-b-que grill up on the front lawn?
SKATTERMAN: I wish, hell naw, secret service would have told me to get my black azzz out of there…(We laugh hard again)
THE HEAT: Any shout outs you wanna leave us with?
SKATTERMAN: Big shouts out to my publicist, Gardner Craig of Red Dahlia PR, shouts out to my entire team at BiggShot Music and Films, and Eric Universal Distribution Group, we getting ready to make this happen. And shouts out to you Nik and The Heat for allowing me to respond to the people who mean the most to us artist, MY FANS!
