President Obama Delivers Heartfelt Historical Farewell Address

On January 10 in Chicago, President Barack Obama delivered his farewell address with poise, credibility, and thorough reflection. He reminded American citizens of the accomplishments during his tenure but it was his ability to express his admiration for First Lady Michelle Obama and his daughters Sasha and Malia that garnered the greatest response. Then, he granted a gracious example of gratitude to Vice President Joe Biden. Obama spoke on the bond that has grown between him and his colleague since they took on the top-tier responsibilities in the U.S.A.

Politically speaking, he charged Americans to get involved and run for office or become more active. “Show up. Dive in. Stay at it. Sometimes you will win. Sometimes you will lose.” Obama motivated listeners and viewers to shun away from radicalism and encouraged common sense approaches to continue to protect our democracy. Though cynics will attempt to disdain his farewell speech as cliche’ and continue to transfer total blame onto him for every past and current dilemma in the land of the free, Obama asserted “Yes we can, yes we did, yes we can!”

On the other hand, he tackled the uncertainty, disappointment, and division that exists since the election of President-elect Donald Trump. Obama admonished Trump to officiate in a manner that caters to multiculturalism including Muslims instead of accentuating a global divide.

His farewell address was clearly a historical moment and the Chicago senator foreshadowed his continuous leadership and engagement in America’s political affairs. While many Americans from various parties yearn for a third term under Obama’s watch, the reaction to his powerful rhetoric indicated a majority approval rate of his legacy for the last eight years.

While none can profess to know what the future will bring in America as it relates to Trump’s presidential legacy and whether 21st century Americans will be led by additional minority presidents, Obama has served as one of the most important individuals to live in the White House.

His two-term presidency provided evidence of hope for change among Americans. While one individual cannot absolutely correct all disgruntlement related to political ideologies, Obama is definitely a loved leader by millions. Despite political naysayers, bigotry, and obstacles, he stayed the course. President Barack Obama joined the ranks of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as an advocate for change.
