Jay Da Menace, one half of Black Menace, a legendary rap group from the heavily talented area of Hollygrove, sends a message with his new mixtape “I Took Yo Beat”.
The wordsmith approaches the project by synthesizing popular urban instrumentals from both lyrically endowed artists and those who miss the mark. Nonetheless, Jay Da Menace layers the music with skillful rhymes and witty performances.
Whether it’s “Broccoli” creating a happier mood or the laid-back “Come&C-Me”, Jay Da Menace provides imagery that connects to faithful listeners. He switches gears with “Da-Other Side” by adding a darker bang to the project. “I Took Yo Beat” crosses geographically and demographically with “Hello” and Jay Da Menace shines as usual riding the wave of the beat comfortably.
This project is a pre-cursor to his spring-slated release “Real Rap”, a double album dropping March, 2017.
The rhyme spitter reflects on “Cut It” and shows admiration for “Dat Girl” along with his son Jay Jones, a young fiery emcee making moves in the industry. Jay Da Menace goes in by adding intensity to the street oriented production while Jay Jones adds the climax. “Real Rap with my pops Jay Da Menace let’s get it”.
Mista Meana of Partners N Crime serves as a guest feature on the clubby “I Promise” and he starts off with “I met her Uptown but she say she from the nine at the second line, can I get a minute of your time?”. Detailing the dialogue and development of an interaction with a lady the narrator is in pursuit of, Meana spits game on the track.
On “Sorry Not Sorry”, the Black Menace b-boy displays a raw set of bars and follows up with a lyrical answer on “Sorryyy”. The project features Mr. Meana, Jay Jones, Konsep, CHYNA, and Militia-Ko. This 21-song installment touches on diverse subject matter and closes with the heartfelt “Exchange” where Jay Da Menace shares his expectations of reciprocity in a relationship.
