Choppin’ It Up With D.J. Slash (Part 1)

While hip-hop may be the glue that fastens the gifted together, differences and originality are key to creating a brand as an artist. Although some choose to take the road most traveled, there still remains a remnant that prides itself in creativity. The Heat Magazine had a chance to chop it up with D.J. Slash, who gained a name as Too Cool along side the late rap icon Tim Smooth.
The Heat Magazine: Tell us how long you have been into deejaying and producing?
D.J. Slash
D.J. Slash:I started spinning in the early in the early 80’s sort of a child prodigy. I began programing beats on the TR 808 around 84 or 85! It was in a friend’s closet, collecting dust. My DJ Crew at the time (The Disco Players) couldn’t make heads or tails with it. I figured it out & started using it within 2 weeks at gigs.
The Heat Magazine: Could you share some of your production credits?
D.J. Slash: The Ultimate Act, Def Inc., TIM SMOOTH & D.J. TOO COOL, PAPA DOC, RATED X., BUSTDOWN, MC THICK, SPORTY T.,
ONE 2 ONE, DA ARTPHARM, I mixed down the 6 SHOT & SOULJA SLIM project, DA ILLEMENTS, ILLFANATICS!
The Heat Magazine: Who inspires you?
D.J. Slash: God.
The Heat Magazine: What separates you from other deejays and producers?
D.J. Slash: The fact that I’m a perfectionist and I strive to paint original abstract pieces. I don’t want a signature mix or sound. And I know I’ve been given a GOD given talent. I’m not trying to be the hottest, most seen or most known. I have no gimmicks or team concepts. I do what I do for the love of the culture of Hip Hop & the elevation of music, which is my passion.
The Heat Magazine: What venues are you currently Deejaying at?
D.J. Slash: I’m a mobile DJ and I love being able to pick and choose when, where and the type of event I want to spin at. Also, I’m not in a DJ gang either but, I am affiliated!
The Heat Magazine: What was your most memorable moment as a professional artist?
D.J. Slash: I have 2 moments. First, being told by an industry guy in NY that rappers are a dime a dozen. Secondly, this is the first time I’m revealing this publicly. One time while meeting a fan and or someone that like my Music, she fainted after I shook her hand or hugged her!
The Heat Magazine: What’s the biggest lesson you have learned in life or in the music business?
D.J. Slash: That you’re only as hot or big as your last hit or performance.
The Heat Magazine: What advice would you give to aspiring deejays, producers, and rappers?
D.J. Slash: Have love and passion for what you do. And study the the origins of Hip Hop and the forefathers that broke the groundwork. I suggest reading “Can’t Stop, Don’t Stop” by Jeff Chang, a very good read.
The Heat Magazine: How do you feel about the current state of hip hop locally and globally?
D.J. Slash: Locally, music in general is in the state of emergency. Being that it’s only seen as a way to make a quick buck. There’s only a few I can sit down and listen to, because you can hear their influences and see they are painting by numbers. Globally, great music is still being made with out it being manufactured and distributed by the handful of what’s left of the majors.
The Heat Magazine: What makes a real deejay?
Night Life with D.J. Slash
D.J. Slash: I’m not sure real and DJ go together. To me, its like anything that people perceive as to being great. That IT factor, you know it when you feel it or witness it. The selection of what that DJ is spinnin’, how he puts it together and makes it seem effortless and seamless.
The Heat Magazine: How do you feel about education?
D.J. Slash: It’s all important. It’s the thing that frees people. Without it, you have a lottery’s chance of achieving your goals and dreams.
The Heat Magazine: Tell us about any upcoming events or music releases.
D.J. Slash: By year’s end I want to complete 2 releases. One, an instrumental Album and a feature album showcasing my 2000 or so songs. I have titles for but, for fear of tracers I won’t divulge them at this time. Also, I’m collaborating and providing music for Ms. PEACHES on her upcoming Poetry Album.
