Mandatory evacuation issued for residents along Tangipahoa River
TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. — Tangipahoa Parish officials called for a mandatory evacuation for residents along the Tangipahoa River.
Officials said the dam at Percy Quin State Park was in danger of failing and flooding was imminent.
The flooding is estimated to affect 40 – 50,000 residents, who had less than 90 minutes to evacuate after the order was given, Jeff McKneely, a spokesman for Tangipahoa Parish said.
The lower part of the parish flooded in 1983 after a similar situation.
Shelter locations are as follows: Hammond West Side Elementary Montessori School, Hammond Junior High Magnet School, Natalbany Elementary School, Nesom Middle School, Amite High School, and Kentwood High Magnet School.
