Police in Charlotte arrested the boyfriend of missing Charlotte teacher Bianca Tanner Thursday morning and charged him with her murder after a body was found in Steele Creek.

Angelo Grayson Smith Jr. is charged with murder.

The body, which was found in a wooded area on the 10400 block of Calico Crossing Lane near Lake Wylie, will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office to be identified.

Smith posted bail Wednesday.

He was extradited back to Charlotte after he was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Chicago over the weekend.

Detectives interviewed him for hours on Wednesday about his relationship with Tanner, and then transported him to the jail, where he was placed under a $100,000 bond Tuesday. That bond was lowered to $20,000 on Wednesday.

Officials said earlier Wednesday that if Smith posted his bond and was released, he would be on house arrest and would be required to wear an electronic monitoring device.

Smith did post bond before 9 p.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said Smith was always a person of interest and had been misleading investigators.

Smith told reporters that he doesn’t know where Tanner is as he was being moved from CMPD headquarters to the Mecklenburg County Jail Tuesday afternoon.

Tanner’s family decided they wanted to talk with Smith to see if he would give them some answers, and went to the jail to talk to him.

After the meeting, the family told WBTV, “We’re no closer today than we were the night she went missing, unfortunately & sadly!”

Tanner was last seen June 7.

A warrant was issued on Smith two weeks after Tanner disappeared. Detectives say Smith left Tanner’s three year old son home alone.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are calling the Tanner case a homicide, and say Smith is a person of interest – he was the last person to see the 31-year-old mother.

According to warrants released in the case, Smith told investigators that he received a text message that led to an argument between him and Tanner the night she disappeared. Tanner left the apartment intoxicated, carrying a bag with her, Smith says.

She hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Tanner recently moved to Charlotte with her son for a teaching job. Before that she was a teacher at Reedy Fork Elementary School in Guilford County.

Tanner’s family members have been conducting searches for her. Tuesday afternoon investigators met with them to give a “briefing on the status of the case, where it’s going, and the strategy to locate Bianca.”

Chief Monroe said “we have determined there will likely be a couple of more searches within the area of Charlotte. We’re not going to divulge those areas just yet.”

After getting a police briefing, and then talking with Smith – Bianca’s family members Tuesday night said “right now we’re feeling overwhelmed
