Arcane Legends Review

a fantasy themed mobile and desktop MMO, already has more than 2.7 million downloads since its release on the App Store less than a week ago and Google Play two weeks prior. Arcane Legends is the fourth title in the popular Legends franchise, which is the world’s largest cross-platform mobile/desktop MMO franchise with more than twelve million downloads.

Features Include:

  • Combat system that delivers the most furious fast-paced co-op and player-vs-player gameplay of any Legends title
  • More than 35 pets that provide game changing combat skills and buffs
  • True cross platform gaming- Players receive the same experience on phones as they do in the Chrome browser and can access the same character and server in either platform
  • Countless hours of worldwide, multiplayer, open-world gameplay

I must admit that I am not seasoned in the MMO genre of video games by any means. The last one I really played was Diablo II and only because a friend bought it for me. So, needless to say I went into Arcane Legends a bit skeptical about whether or not it would or even could win me over.

Me “Luminoxus” and my trusty dragon companion Sharon

I started first by playing Arcane Legends on my Android phone. I created my account, chose a class (Warrior, Rogue or Sorcerer) then customized my character’s appearance, picked out my trusty companion animal and was off on my adventure! The character customization leaves something to be desired. With so few options I got the feeling that I would eventually run across another player that looked exactly like me. What you get from Arcane legends on your mobile device is a simple display with your basic attack in the bottom right corner and on the bottom left corner you get the touch screen circle pad for movement which I have never cared for. So I quickly downloaded the game on Google Chrome and adapted quickly to the more traditional asdw with numbered hotkeys. Everything I had done on the Android version had transferred seamlessly and easily over to my Computer through connecting my account to my facebook. So, as long as you have an internet connection you can always pick up and play Arcane Legends without skipping a beat.

Arcane Legends does a great job of easing you into your first battles. Just a few enemies at a time gives you enough time to try all your options and get comfortable with the controls. Even though you know you are just a level 1 character, defeating your first group of enemies still makes you feel like a bad ass. The cool thing about AL is that this feeling never really goes away. You regain health and mana slowly over time, but if you are in the heat of battle and can’t spare that time you can purchase anything directly from the menu so there are very few exhausting treks back to the last town to buy potions.

Making friends is as simple as a few clicks of your mouse and the Arcane Legends community is extremely warm and inviting. You can make multiple friends your first day, join guilds and there are always people willing to aid you in battle even if you were originally going it alone. You can chat with friends and guild members, but this function is inconvenient to use. You will probably just end up not chatting with anyone at all.

There are daily and weekly events that happen like clockwork and sidequests at every turn, so even if you finish the main quest there will always be a damsel in distress, a companion animal that has been separated from his or her owner or lost and stolen items that need to be recovered. These quests will keep you coming back day after day.

Arcane Legends lacks diversity in its items. Once you get a really good weapon, armor set or helmet you kinda stop checking your inventory for better equipment after opening a chest. This sort of dampens the excitement of taking on a horde of enemies or the next boss because you go in knowing that the spoils of your battle are going to be so-so loot that isn’t going to take you further.

The style of the game is very cartoonish and light-hearted, but it is supposed to be accessible by all and the look accomplishes that. With the graphical standards of the MMO genre, and the fact that this game is completely free to play, I would have to say that Arcane Legends looks great. The cut scenes fell short in a lot of areas such as the lack of mouth and eye movement, and the walking animations resemble that of early South Park. You get a wider range of movement from the in game avatars than the cut scene animations. Having said all that, the story still made me….feel. I felt more connected with my character, my companion animal and the NPC’s around me than any free to play game should be able to pull off.

The bottom line is that Arcane Legends falls short if you are a seasoned MMO vet but is a fantastic game if you are a wanting to be introduced to the world of MMO’s. Being absolutely free, with fun and easy to learn gameplay and the fact that the handheld version looks just about as good as the browser version there is no reason why you shouldn’t have this game at your finger tips at all times.
